The Nintendo NES with its Super Mario titles enjoyed a brief period of dominance in the console space and fought off Sega’s Master system in the US although was challenged strongly in Europe. In the late 80’s the market again lurched forward with “16 bit” chips and the Sega Megadrive now moved into pole position and Sonic the Hedgehog was what we all wanted ! Other consoles of higher quality also began to achieve a “cult” status most notable being the “NeoGeo” and “TurboGrafx” models.
Nintendo was back in the game by the end of the decade with the SNES.
